Corporal of Horse Abraham Marriott
who was born at Ashover, Derby during 1845 attested for the Life Guards at
Marylebone Police Court [naughty boy!] on 16 October 1886. On enlistment
he was found to be 6 feet 0¾ inches tall [he’d grown 2¼ inches by the time
of his discharge more than 21 years later] with brown hair, light brown
eyes and a fair complexion, he stated that he was a Gardener. |

Private Robert Michael was born at Dumbarton in 1817 and was a
24-year old Labourer when he enlisted at Glasgow on 5 October 1841 into
the 2nd Regiment of Foot. At a sliver over 5 feet six inches, he had grey
eyes, dark brown hair and a fresh complexion. Of his 21 years service
almost 13 of them were spent overseas: 40 months in India and 9½ years at
the Cape of Good Hope. Whilst in South Africa he participated in the
Third Kaffir War of 1850-53 and was one of the 24 officers and 577 other
ranks awarded the South Africa Medal, 1834-53. On discharge it was stated
that his conduct had been ‘Very Good’ although he had been entered twice
in the Regimental Defaulters’ Book. |

Colour Serjeant William Earl
was born at Norwood, Hounslow, Middlesex and was an 18-year old Labourer
when he attested at Westminster on 23 September 1857. Above average
height at 5 feet six inches, he had hazel-coloured eyes, light brown hair
and a fresh complexion. Of his 21 years service, 8½ were spent overseas:
4 months in Malta, almost 4 years in Corfu, almost 2 years at Gibraltar
and 28 months in Bermuda. On discharge it was stated that his conduct had
been ‘Very Good’ and that his name had been entered in the Regimental
Defaulters Book twice and on one of these occasions he had been tried by
Court Martial for ‘breaking out of barracks and drunkenness’. Following
his release he made his home at Southall. |

Charles Cooper
was born at Leather Lane, London in 1845 and was a 20-year old Draper when
he enlisted into the 2nd Foot at Westminster on 15 June 1865. On
enlistment he was described as being 5 feet 5¼ inches tall with grey eyes,
fair hair and a fresh complexion. Three years later, on 4 November 1868,
he was appointed a Bandsman. He served for 21 years, 12¾ of which
(July 1866 to April 1879) were in India. |
