Propelled Grenade attack by the IRA on 28th November
1972 in Armagh.
"Support Company. The company was fortunate in only having light
casualties, although shot at on s number of occasions. However on
the night of the 28th November, the anti-tank platoon, arriving in Lurgan
to assist "C" company, were subjected to an RPG-7 rocket attack, when
L/Col. Royles, Ptes. Egan and Gregory were wounded and Ochwat, Hunt,
Harrison and Bailey were slightly hurt."
He is also mentioned a few times in the regimental journal "The Stafford
Knot" as serving in anti-tank and drum platoons. With original Regimental
Journal of April 1973 #28 regarding the regimental tour and giving details
of attack in which he is mentioned. Also with two
photographs of him (one in uniform).
Born 22.7.53 in Staffordshire of Polish extraction.
Enlisted as a boy soldier 2.1.69 and did his training at the Mercian
Depot, Lichfield. Was a junior drummer and joined 1st Staffs in Sharjah
(Land Forces Gulf) 6.8.71. Subsequent service: UK 8.12.71 - 4.9.72, UK/NI
5.9.72 - 4.1.73, UK 5.1.73 - 3.8.73, Canada 4.8.73 - 27.8.73, UK 28.8.73 -
14.10.73, British Army of the Rhine (BAOR Germany) 15.10.73 - 19.3.74.
Took his discharge in UK 20.3.74. |

In 1971 the regiment was sent to Bahrain and Sharjah in
the Persian Gulf, where they had the melancholy task of hauling down the
Union Jack for the last time. From the Persian Gulf, the Battalion
returned to Dover. In September 1972, the regiment undertook a four month
tour in Armagh in Northern Ireland, and then, in October 1973, moved to
Osnabruck in Germany. From there, they had a second Northern Ireland
'emergency' tour in Londonderry from July to November 1974. |

Confirmed 21753 Capt O J Mann NZIR. 1RNZIR was formed by an
amalgamation of 10 battalions 1 April 1964 and had a total posted
strength of 981 personnel during its tour in Malaysia and Borneo
between 1963 and 1965. Based in Terendak Military Camp as part of 28
Commonwealth Brigade, the Brigade was part of 17 Gurkha Division whose
command was based in Hong Kong.
